Saya was born at Sui-no Sato, literally under the Ruby Sea. A child like the others : playful, jovial and a little groupe of friends. It was her parents who played a bit role in what she will become.
Daizo and Koharu rebelled against Garlemald presence around the Ruby Sea. Even protected inside their underwater city, they couldn’t stay doing nothing. Saya had six years old when they put everything in place to escape from the village, keeping in mind everything that this implies : leaving Sui-no-Sato was an act of no return with the impossibility to come back for any reasons.
Of course, they cannot leave without telling Saya what they wanted to do. Despite being too young to understand it fully, her parents told her everything : why they need to leave and mostly why they will probably not come back. The young Raen more or less understood what was being pointed out to her and agreed. She was then entrusted to a couple of friends, Katsuya and Rinshi, who were aware about their choice, but not brave enough to follow them. Though taking care of Saya was the best they can do to support their friends.
Months passed and quickly, reality comes and hit Saya in the face. She starts to ask everyone when she will see her parents again. At the mercy of tears and cries, the Little Raen ends up really understanding and despite of being young, Saya entered a period of depression. She took some times to go back to a normal life, difficult when an entire village did not necessarily look favorably on a child abandoned by banished parents.
Yet, Saya never blamed them for what they did. Although small, she was convinced that they made the right choice by defending the country. Being so stubborn, as much as her mother, sometimes caused her some trouble with adults. But she never gave up.
Now an young adult, the village started to be too small for her and of course, what her parents did makes her even more interested by the life outside her bubble. That, and the little seed of the revolution had also germinated in her. She talked about that with Katsuya and Rinshi. They knew this moment would come eventually but did not encourage Saya’s decision. Still stubborn, the Raen ended by fleeing the village one night, leaving behind her a letter for her adoptive parents.
Once at the surface she went to Yanxia. But once arrived, she came across a Garlemald garrison. They quickly came to the conclusion that Saya was not someone from the village and they took her for a spy and tried to capture her. Frightened, she manages to escape anyway. Hurt and starving, she passes out not far from the Azim’s Steppes.
Now awake, she finds herself inside a tent, another Raen, Mashi, next to her. She learned that she was taken in by the Malaguld, a Xaela clan from the Steppes known for accepting other Raen too. Mashi continued to take care of her and the two girls became friends quickly. Thanks to her Saya learned a lot more about the world around, living almost in autarky doesn’t help to learn much.
With Mashi’s help, Saya also founds some books, learning more about Eorzea in general. Likewise, she became interested in the conflict in which her parents had been involved and obviously, learned the turn of events… and the high probability that she would never see them again.
Meanwhile her affair with Mashi became more intimate. The two girls fell in love with each other but Saya’s will to continue her parents journey grew much more than she would have liked. They both decided to end the relation the day Saya took the road to the City-States of Eorzea where Garlemald ultimately had little control.
Months after, she arrived at Ul’dah. Being an Au Ra, she was quickly spotted by infrequent people, who complimented her on her "exoticism". She quickly distanced herself but above all : learn to defend herself. This is how she ended up joining the Pugilist Guild.
She became stronger, more confident too. She knew how to attack, defend, how to talk. But she was alone. All the bonds she had been able to make were now so far, so fragile and ultimately, she went into another depression. But this time, instead of staying alone, she went into some darker places from Ul’dah, participating into some private tournament, using her fists to win battles and gain gil. Having more wins than losses made bad company eventually catch up with her again.
A few times, she used her fist to defend her own life. That’s also the way she understood the wrong path she had taken. A path her parents would never have wanted. She was very angry with herself and the girl decided to leave Ul’dah to find some semblance of calm elsewhere. This is how she ended up in Gridania, where the forest reminded her a little of her seabed.
This is also where she approached the Adventurers Guild in order to have some income and above all, enough to occupy her days. With her strength and knowledge, she began to make a name for herself, while using the rest of her time to the library. She learned about a way to become stronger : Rhalgr’s Fist.
Sadly, that fighting style disappeared years ago, but Saya did everything she can to learn about it and eventually teach herself some lost skills of Rhalgr’s Fist. This was also a way to became closer with the Ala Mhigo Resistance and finally be a part of what she wanted since the beginning of her journey.
The war was long, but Saya made it until the end and her country was finally free. She obviously knew that coming back to her birth place was impossible, but now she’s certain that they can leave peacefully.
Yet, months later, during a stay in Kugane, Saya saw merchants claiming to be from her hometown. Curious, even finding home, she became interested by the story. She eventually learned that the latter had recently opened up to the rest of the world. It took a while for her to convince herself, but one day, she did.
Saya took the road to Sui-no-Sato. Staying in front of the doors, someone came to her asking why she was here. Explaining her situation and after a little time, she was able to cross the door and walk once more inside her village. She quickly took the path to Katsuya and Rinshi’s house afraid like never before, but they immediatly recognized her. She left when she had 18 years old returned 7 years later and now 25 years old. It took seven years, but she’s here with them and her parents finally can rest in peace.
Today, Saya is now aged of 27. She lives in The Lavender Beds, still an Adventurer and love reading books despite having no more place for them in her bookshelves.
Psychology :
Saya is naturally jovial and is very teasing towards people she likes. In fact, even with those she doesn’t necessarily know well. There is little chance you will see her without a smile on her face, even in the worst situations.
Her boundless curiosity sometimes causes her to ask perhaps somewhat inappropriate questions on just about any subject. She has few, if any, barriers. Everything interests her : from the small hobby to the most intimate things. But she will never judge anyone for what they are or what they like.
Saya’s positivity usually takes her to discussions where her humor will always have something to say. She doesn’t hesitate to gently prick her interlocutor, without going so far as to upset them or well, at least she tries.
